Women’s High Visibility Clothing: Fit, Sizing and How to Order for Mixed Crews

Two women in a warehouse, one wearing a hi vis vest

Women’s high visibility clothing is cut on a women’s pattern: narrower shoulders, more room at the chest and hips, a defined waist and shorter sleeves and body lengths than a men’s or “unisex” size. That matters for safety as much as comfort. A men’s vest that is too long and too wide shifts and gapes, can catch on equipment, and moves the reflective tape out of position. Buying women’s sizes for women on a crew improves fit, keeps the tape where it should be, and makes it more likely the garment is actually worn.

Women’s Cut vs Unisex

Area Unisex / men’s cut on a woman Women’s cut
Shoulders Too wide; shoulder tape slides Narrower; tape stays on the shoulder
Chest and hips Tight at chest or hips when waist fits Shaped for chest and hip room
Body length Too long; lower tape at the hips or below Proportioned; lower tape at the right height
Sleeves Too long; cuffs cover hands Shorter sleeve length
Snag risk Loose fabric catches Closer fit, less excess

Which Garments Need a Women’s Fit Most

  • Jackets and coats: shoulders and sleeve length matter most.
  • Shirts and polos: chest and body length.
  • Vests: women’s vests or adjustable side closures improve fit.
  • Trousers and coveralls: rise, hip and leg length — coveralls in particular rarely fit women well in men’s sizes.

Compliance Is the Same

Women’s garments are certified to the same standards — ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 or EN ISO 20471 — and the same rule applies: the smallest size in the range must meet the area requirements. Small women’s sizes are where this is hardest, so check that the class on the label covers the full size range you buy. Colour options are the same three fluorescent colours; pink and other colours are not compliant (see our guide to hi vis colours).

From Our Factory Floor

Since 2004 we have made women’s hi vis ranges for distributors and employers. Lessons we apply:

  • Women’s ranges are drafted on women’s blocks, not by shrinking men’s patterns.
  • Tape positions are set on the women’s pattern so shoulder and chest bands land correctly.
  • Smaller sizes (XS, S) are checked for class compliance first, because they have the least area.
  • Pockets are sized and placed for women’s proportions — chest pockets that sit too low or too high are a common complaint.

Planning a Mixed-Crew Order

  • Ask each worker which fit and size they prefer; do not assume women want women’s sizes only or men’s sizes only.
  • Order women’s and men’s sizes as separate lines with separate size charts.
  • Use the same colours and logo positions so the crew looks consistent.
  • Request fit samples in both cuts before bulk production.
