Hi vis cargo pants are work trousers with fluorescent fabric or reflective bands, plus thigh cargo pockets for tools, phones and documents. Choose full fluorescent cargo pants when workers need the most visibility or must reach Class 3 with a Class 2 top; choose dark cargo pants with reflective bands when dirt and durability matter more than daytime visibility. For hard-working trades, look for polycotton twill or ripstop, reinforced knees with knee pad pockets, and bar-tacked pockets.
Fluorescent vs Dark Cargo Pants
| Factor | Fluorescent cargo pants | Dark cargo pants with tape |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime visibility | High | Low |
| Night visibility | High (tape) | Good (tape) |
| Dirt hiding | Poor | Good |
| Raising the outfit to Class 3 | Yes, as ANSI Class E with a Class 2/3 top | Usually not, unless designed and tested for it |
| Best for | Roadwork, night work, traffic areas | Workshops, warehouses, lower-risk areas |
Features That Matter
- Fabric: polyester/cotton twill (comfortable, durable) or ripstop (tear-resistant, lighter).
- Cargo pockets: flapped thigh pockets, plus a phone pocket and a rule pocket.
- Knees: reinforced knee panels with pockets for removable knee pads for flooring, plumbing and electrical work.
- Waist: elasticated side panels or a gusset improve comfort when kneeling and climbing.
- Tape: two bands around each lower leg, positioned to be visible above boots.
- Lengths: regular, long and short legs, so workers do not cut the hem and lose the tape.
Standards
Under ANSI/ISEA 107-2020, hi vis trousers are Class E: not compliant alone, but they raise a Class 2 or Class 3 top to Class 3. Under EN ISO 20471, trousers are usually Class 1 or Class 2 depending on size and design. For electrical or petrochemical work, FR cargo pants are built from certified FR fabric with FR tape.
From Our Factory Floor
Since 2004 we have made hi vis work trousers in many layouts. Points we check on samples:
- Pocket depth when kneeling: phones and tools should not slide out when the wearer kneels.
- Knee pad pocket position: it must match the knee on each size, which means grading the pocket position.
- Bar tacks: on pocket corners, belt loops and the crotch.
- Tape position on long and short legs: adjusted for each length.
FAQ
Are hi vis cargo pants ANSI compliant?
Fluorescent pants can be ANSI Class E, which is compliant only as part of an ensemble with a Class 2 or 3 top.

Yes. Knee pads are usually supplied separately.
Which fabric lasts longest?
Ripstop resists tears; heavier polycotton twill resists abrasion. Choose based on the main wear risk.
