A hi vis fleece lined jacket has a weather-resistant outer shell with fleece sewn inside it, so it blocks wind and light rain while feeling warm and soft against the body. A hi vis fleece jacket is made of fleece all the way through: lighter, more breathable and more comfortable for active work, but it lets wind through and soaks up rain. Pick the fleece lined jacket as an outer layer for cold, windy days; pick the fleece jacket for dry, cool weather or as a mid-layer under a waterproof shell.
The Two Styles Side by Side
| Factor | Fleece lined jacket | Fleece jacket |
|---|---|---|
| Outer fabric | Polyester oxford, softshell or coated woven | Fluorescent polyester fleece |
| Wind | Blocks most wind | Wind passes through (unless bonded to a membrane) |
| Rain | Water-repellent or waterproof, depending on shell | Absorbs water; dries quickly |
| Breathability | Lower | High |
| Weight and bulk | Heavier | Lighter, packs smaller |
| Best role | Outer layer in cold weather | Outer layer in dry cool weather, or mid-layer |
| Typical tape | Sewn tape on the shell | Sewn or segmented heat-transfer tape |
How Warm Is Each One?
Warmth depends on fleece weight and on how much wind reaches the body. A 280–320 g/m² fleece is warm in still air, but on an exposed site the wind removes that warmth quickly. The same fleece behind a windproof shell feels far warmer. As a rough rule:
- Cool and dry, active work: fleece jacket on its own.
- Cool with wind or drizzle: fleece lined jacket.
- Cold and wet: fleece jacket under a waterproof shell, or a fully insulated winter jacket.
If you need a tested insulation rating for a European tender, ask for EN 14058 (cool environments) or EN 342 (cold environments). These are assessed on the finished garment.
Visibility on Fleece
Both styles can be built to ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 Class 3 or EN ISO 20471 Class 2 or 3, because they have sleeves. Fleece has two specific visibility issues:
- Fluorescent colour on fleece. Brushed fabrics have to be dyed and finished carefully to reach the colour and luminance requirements. Not every fleece mill can do this consistently, so the fabric should be tested, not assumed.
- Tape on pile fabric. Heat-transfer tape needs a stable surface; on deep-pile fleece, sewn tape or tape applied on a smooth panel is more reliable.
From Our Factory Floor
We have made fleece and fleece lined hi vis garments since 2004. The points we check on every sample:
- Pilling. Standard fleece pills after repeated washing, which dulls the fluorescent surface. Anti-pilling fleece costs a little more and keeps garments looking compliant for longer.
- Shrinkage. Fleece and shell fabrics can shrink at different rates. On a fleece lined jacket, a mismatch twists seams after washing. We wash-test the combination before bulk.
- Static and lint. Fleece collects dust, wood chips and burrs on some sites. For dirty environments a smooth-faced shell with fleece inside is often a better choice than an all-fleece jacket.
- Zip guards. A soft chin guard at the top of the zip makes a big difference in comfort on cold days.
Which One for Your Crew?
| Work | Choose |
|---|---|
| Warehouse and logistics in winter | Fleece jacket |
| Supervisors moving between office and site | Fleece jacket or softshell |
| Road crews on exposed sites | Fleece lined jacket |
| Wet climates | Fleece jacket under a waterproof shell |
| Very cold, static work | Insulated winter jacket instead |

What to Specify When You Order
- Style: fleece lined or full fleece; fleece weight and anti-pilling requirement
- Shell fabric and water resistance (for fleece lined jackets)
- Visibility standard and class
- Tape type and layout; colour and any two-tone design
- Size breakdown, logo method (embroidery works very well on fleece)
FAQ
Can a hi vis fleece jacket be worn in the rain?
Only briefly. Fleece absorbs water and loses warmth when wet. Wear a waterproof shell over it in rain.
Is a fleece lined jacket breathable?
Less than a fleece jacket. A mesh-lined back vent or a breathable shell fabric helps for active work.
Can the fleece be used as a liner?
Yes. A hi vis fleece jacket with matching zips can be zipped into a compatible shell as a 3 in 1 system.
