Hi vis flannel shirts combine the warmth and feel of a brushed button-up work shirt with high-visibility colour and reflective tape. They are popular in autumn and winter because they layer well under jackets and over T-shirts. The catch is that true flannel is usually made from cotton or cotton-rich blends, and cotton is hard to dye to the fluorescent colour limits required by ANSI/ISEA 107 and EN ISO 20471. So most “hi vis flannel” shirts are either brushed polyester shirts with a flannel feel, or plaid flannel shirts with reflective tape that are not certified high-visibility garments. Check which one you are buying.
Three Kinds of “Hi Vis Flannel”
| Type | Construction | Certified hi vis? | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushed polyester “flannel-feel” shirt | Fluorescent polyester, brushed for softness | Can be, if tested | Where a class is required |
| Plaid flannel with reflective tape | Cotton or blend plaid, sewn tape | No — background colour fails | Low-risk areas; worn under a hi vis vest |
| Fluorescent-panel flannel | Flannel body with fluorescent polyester panels | Possible on larger sizes; depends on panel area | Uniform programmes wanting a flannel look |
Button-Up Hi Vis Shirts as an Alternative
If the goal is a warm, buttoned shirt that is compliant, a woven hi vis button-up shirt in a heavier polyester or polycotton twill is often the better choice. It looks like a classic work shirt, takes embroidery well, and can be built to ANSI Class 2 or 3 (long sleeve) or EN ISO 20471 Class 2. For cold weather, wear it under a fleece or jacket.
Layering Flannel and Hi Vis
- Flannel under a hi vis vest: simple and common; the vest provides the visibility class.
- Hi vis button-up under a jacket: the jacket must be hi vis if it is the outer layer.
- Brushed hi vis shirt as an outer layer in mild weather: works if it meets the class required.
From Our Factory Floor
Since 2004, buyers have often asked us for fluorescent flannel. Our honest advice:
- Cotton flannel will not hold fluorescent colour to standard limits reliably, and it fades quickly.
- Brushed polyester can give a soft, warm handle while holding fluorescent colour.
- Plaid patterns reduce the fluorescent area, so plaid hi vis shirts are rarely certifiable.
- For a flannel look with compliance, we recommend fluorescent panels across the shoulders and body, tested on the smallest size.
FAQ
Are hi vis flannel shirts ANSI compliant?
Plaid flannel shirts generally are not. Brushed fluorescent polyester shirts can be, if certified.
Is a hi vis flannel jacket available?
Shirt-jackets with fluorescent panels and quilted lining are possible; certification depends on the panel area and fabric.
Can flannel be flame resistant?
FR flannel exists, but fluorescent FR flannel is rare. For FR hi vis, see our hi vis FR shirts guide.
