High Visibility Long Sleeve Shirt: Class 3 Coverage and Sun Protection

Surveyor in an orange long sleeve hi vis shirt beside a total station

A high visibility long sleeve shirt does two jobs at once: it protects the arms from sun, scratches and insects, and it adds the sleeve coverage that the highest visibility class requires. With reflective bands around both sleeves, a long sleeve hi vis shirt can meet ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 Class 3 on its own — something a short-sleeve shirt or a vest cannot do. For hot weather, choose a lightweight wicking knit; for tougher work, a woven work shirt; and for flame or arc hazards, an FR long sleeve shirt.

Why Sleeves Matter

  • Class 3: both ANSI/ISEA 107 and EN ISO 20471 tie the top class to coverage of the arms or legs.
  • Motion: reflective sleeve bands show arm movement, which helps drivers recognise a person — important for flaggers.
  • Sun protection: long sleeves reduce UV exposure on long outdoor shifts.
  • Skin protection: fewer scratches and insect bites in landscaping and utility work.

Types of Long Sleeve Hi Vis Shirts

Type Fabric Best for
Lightweight wicking crew neck Polyester birdseye, ~120–150 g/m² Hot weather, flaggers, road crews
Heavier knit crew or henley Polyester interlock or brushed knit Cool mornings, layering
Woven button-up Polycotton or polyester twill Utilities, rail, engineering
FR long sleeve Certified FR fabric with FR tape Electrical, oil and gas
Quarter zip Knit or fleece Mid-layer in cool weather

Is a Long Sleeve Shirt Hot in Summer?

Not necessarily. In direct sun, a light wicking long sleeve shirt shades the skin and often feels cooler than bare arms. Choose light fabrics, segmented tape for airflow, and features like underarm mesh panels. Thumbholes keep sleeves down when wearing gloves.

From Our Factory Floor

Since 2004 we have made long sleeve hi vis shirts for road crews and utilities. Details that matter on samples:

  • Sleeve tape position: bands must sit on the upper and lower arm, not at the cuff, and stay visible when sleeves are pushed up slightly.
  • Sleeve length by size: sleeves that are too short pull tape up the arm; we grade sleeve length carefully and offer tall options.
  • Cuff design: rib cuffs or thumbholes keep sleeves in place under gloves.
  • Smallest size: we check Class 3 compliance on the smallest size first.

FAQ

Is a long sleeve hi vis shirt Class 3?

It can be, if the tape layout and fluorescent area meet Class 3 in the smallest size. Check the label.

Can I roll up the sleeves?

Rolling sleeves can hide tape and reduce the class. Choose a lighter fabric instead.

Do you make long sleeve hi vis polos?

Yes — see our hi vis polo shirts guide.
