Hi vis work shirts are durable, usually woven or heavy-knit shirts — often button-up with a collar and chest pockets — built for daily trade work rather than casual wear. Compared with a hi vis T-shirt, a work shirt resists abrasion better, carries pens, notebooks and phones in flapped pockets, looks more professional, and can be made in flame-resistant fabric. Choose a woven polycotton or polyester work shirt for rail, utilities, engineering and maintenance crews; choose a knit T-shirt or polo when comfort in heat matters more than toughness.

Fabrics
- Polyester/cotton twill: durable, comfortable, takes embroidery well. High-polyester blends hold fluorescent colour best.
- Polyester poplin or ripstop: lighter for hot climates.
- FR fabrics: for electrical, oil and gas and petrochemical work; tape and thread must also be FR.
- Vented designs: mesh-lined back yokes and underarm vents improve airflow.
Visibility Class
Long-sleeve work shirts with tape around the torso, over the shoulders and around the sleeves can reach ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 Class 3 or EN ISO 20471 Class 2. Short-sleeve work shirts typically reach Class 2. Two-tone designs with navy lower bodies look smart but reduce the fluorescent area — check the smallest size.
From Our Factory Floor
Since 2004 we have produced hi vis work shirts for rail, utility and engineering uniforms. What we check on samples:
- Button or snap choice: snaps are faster with gloves and are safer than buttons on FR shirts.
- Pocket flaps and tape: flaps must not cover the chest tape band when closed.
- Collar construction: a fused collar keeps its shape through industrial laundering.
- Industrial washing: many work shirt programmes are laundered by rental services; we choose tape and fabric for the process.
FAQ

They can be, when built with certified fabric and tape in a compliant layout.
Can a hi vis work shirt be flame resistant?
Yes. See our hi vis FR shirts guide for the standards.
Short or long sleeves?
Long sleeves for Class 3, sun protection and FR work; short sleeves for heat where Class 2 is enough.
